Facing NOMA – The Geneva experience (Dr. med. Ilias Petrou, E)
Noma is a gangrenous disease that leads to severe destruction of the face. It affects almost exclusively young children in developing countries with a high mortality rate. For the children who survive, the consequences are often very disfiguring and exclude them from society. The risk factors are known (malnutrition, debilitating diseases), but the etiology remains partially unknown. For almost 40 years, the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Hospital of Geneva (HUG) has been dealing with the surgical treatment of this disease. The plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon Dr. med. Ilias Petrou will tell us about his work.
